Arrival Zanzibar - Transfer to Beach Resort
Your Zanzibar beach paradise begins at ABEID AMANI KARUME INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (Zanzibar Airport) - located 5km south of Stone Town. Most visitors arrive via: DOMESTIC FLIGHT from mainland Tanzania (Dar es Salaam 20 min $80-150, Arusha 1.5 hours $180-280, Serengeti 2 hours $250-350), OR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT (Kenya Airways from Nairobi, Ethiopian from Addis, etc.), OR FERRY from Dar es Salaam (2-4 hours, $35-80, rough seas possible!).
ARRIVAL: International terminal small but modern. Clear immigration (visa on arrival $50 USD cash or card - have USD handy!), collect luggage, clear customs (nothing to declare), exit to arrivals hall. MEET & GREET: Resort representative waits with signboard (your name or resort name).
Welcome to ZANZIBAR! Warm humid tropical air, Swahili greetings ("Karibu Zanzibar!" - Welcome to Zanzibar!), relaxed island vibe immediately apparent. Load luggage into transfer vehicle (private car, shared shuttle, or resort minibus depending on booking).
TRANSFER to beach resort begins (40-60km depending on destination beach, 1-1.5 hours). ROUTE travels through ZANZIBAR ISLAND: Pass Stone Town outskirts (Arabic/Swahili architecture, bustling streets), then north through interior: Spice plantations (cloves, vanilla, cinnamon growing roadside), Rural villages (mud and coral-stone houses, children waving enthusiastically, chickens/goats), Roadside stalls (tropical fruits - jackfruit, mangoes, coconuts), Eventually turning toward coast.
BEACH DESTINATIONS (Choose based on preference): NUNGWI (North Coast) - Most popular! Pristine white sand, turquoise water, swimming year-round (no seaweed!), lively atmosphere (beach bars, restaurants, water sports), stunning sunsets.
KENDWA (North Coast, adjacent to Nungwi) - Quieter than Nungwi, famous beach parties (Full Moon parties!), no seaweed, perfect swimming, romantic. PAJE (East Coast) - Kite surfing capital! Turquoise lagoon, strong winds (perfect kiting), tidal (low tide exposes sand flats - walk to reef!), bohemian vibe.
JAMBIANI (Southeast Coast) - Authentic village feel, fewer tourists, beautiful beach, tidal, local interaction. MATEMWE (Northeast Coast) - Secluded, quiet, tidal, excellent snorkeling offshore (Mnemba Atoll nearby), romantic boutique resorts.
MICHAMVI PENINSULA (Southeast) - The Rock restaurant famous!, secluded, luxury resorts, tidal.
