The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to many large mammals. Some of the resident mammals in the park include vast herds of dust–red elephants, rhinos, buffalo, lions, leopards, pods of hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, lesser kudus, gerenuks, and a prolific bird life that features 500 recorded species.
