DAY 1

Nairobi to Aberdare

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive north through the central highlands with a stop for coffee or lunch en route. Arrive in the Aberdare area early afternoon, check in, then spend the rest of the day enjoying the cool forest air and mountain scenery. Depending on your lodge style, you will either take a short afternoon activity or settle in to watch wildlife visiting the waterhole and salt lick from the lodge. Dinner and overnight in Aberdare.

DAY 2

Aberdare to Sweetwaters Ol Pejeta

After breakfast, drive down from the forests toward Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Arrive around midday, check in, then head out for an afternoon game drive in one of Kenya’s best private conservancies. Expect excellent chances of rhino, plus lion, elephant and general plains game. If time allows, add a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters (Ol Pejeta).

DAY 3

Sweetwaters to Samburu

Start early with a short morning game drive or a relaxed breakfast, then continue north toward Samburu, crossing into drier, rugged landscapes as you approach the Ewaso Nyiro River. Arrive in time for lunch and rest, then take an afternoon game drive focused on Samburu’s signature wildlife, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Sunset by the river, then dinner and overnight in Samburu.

DAY 4

Full Day at Samburu

Wake up before sunrise and take tea or coffee as the camp comes alive. You head out early while it is still cool, following the Ewaso Nyiro River where elephants, buffalo and big cats often move at first light. The morning is for slow, deliberate game viewing, working the riverbanks, doum palms and open scrub to find the Samburu special five, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk and Beisa oryx. If predators are active, you stay with the sighting and let the moment play out rather than rushing to tick boxes.

As the sun climbs and wildlife starts to seek shade, you ease back toward camp. Late morning is for breakfast or brunch, a shower and downtime, Samburu heat is real and the middle of the day is best spent resting. You can sit by the river, watch birds around camp, or just switch off for a while.

After lunch, you set out again when the light softens and temperatures drop. The afternoon drive goes wider, combining river crossings, dry riverbeds and rocky viewpoints to scan for movement. This is a good time for elephants at water, crocodiles in the river, and cats waking up for the evening hunt. You finish with a sunset stop in a scenic spot, then return to camp in the darkening light.

Back at camp, you freshen up and meet around the fire for drinks and stories from the day. Dinner follows, unhurried, then a quiet night with the sounds of the bush in the background and the sense that Samburu is still moving out there while you sleep.

DAY 5

Full day Samburu

Spend the day exploring deeper into the reserve with a morning and afternoon game drive, or a longer full-day outing with a packed lunch. Track predators, follow elephant herds along the river, and work the open plains for the rare northern species. Return to camp before dark for a relaxed evening, dinner and your second overnight in Samburu.
